About me
Carlos Soares has a Bachelor’s degree in Systems and Informatics Engineering at U. Minho, focusing on Machine Learning (ML) and undertaking an internship at CWI/Utrecht U. (the Netherlands), working on evolutionary computation. Carlos has also completed a Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computation at U. Porto, Faculty of Economics, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science at U. Porto, Faculty of Sciences, specializing further in ML. In teaching, he held faculty positions, including Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics of U. Porto for 15 years, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of U. Porto (FEUP) from 2012 onwards, and faculty at the Porto Business School (PBS) from 2008. He also lectured at ISCTE/IUL (University Institute of Lisbon) from 2018 to 2020 and at ISCAP/IPP (Polytechnical Institute of Porto) from 2014 to 2022. In project coordination, he was/is Leading Researcher at FEUP of projects such as the Center for Responsible AI, AISym4MED, and NUTRIA as a Leading Researcher at FEUP and Team Coordinator for projects like Safe Cities. In management, he held positions such as Adjunct Director of the M.Sc. Programme on Data Science and Engineering at FEUP from 2020 to 2023, Director of the Ph.D. Programme on Informatics Engineering at FEUP from 2018 to 2023, and Subdirector of the Informatics Engineering Department at FEUP from 2017 to 2023. Additionally, he has been (Co-)Coordinator of the Business Intelligence & Analytics Programme at PBS since 2015. His research involvement includes positions such as External Advisor for Intelligent Systems at Fraunhofer AICOS Portugal since 2019 and Researcher at the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science (LIACC) at FEUP since 2018. He also collaborates with the Machine Learning Lab at INESC TEC since 2018 and as an External Member of the Research Center on Machine Learning and Data Analysis at USP (Brazil) since 2012.
