About me
Alexandre Sousa, PhD in Computer Science, is Pro-Rector for Digital Transformation at University of Maia – ISMAI and coordinates the MSc in Information Technology, Communication and Multimedia. Previously to joining ISMAI he was a researcher at INESC Porto (1985-2000), in 1990 he worked in France at Sextant Avionique developing software critical systems for the Airbus family of aircraft, in 1991 he worked in Denmark as a software developer for Mentor Informatik. He was a researcher at the projects Alert – Emergency Room Tracking (2001-2003), Manchester – Emergency Room Triage (2002), Eureka E!2235 IKF Information Knowledge Fusion (2000-2005), technical director and project leader, respectively, of the e-government and digital cities projects Maia Digital (2003-2004) and Porto Digital (2005-2008), in the later was built Porto’s optical fiber telecommunications network. In 2009-2011 in representation of the city of Porto he launched and supervised the public private partnership for the expansion of that network, that PPP ultimately failed with the public entity accusing the private entity of fraud, he was then responsible for disentangling the PPP in the courts (2011-2015). In 2017 he was technical lead of the city of Porto participation in the EU project Innovation Action, IoT-01-2016 – Large Scale Pilots, SynchroniCity: Delivering an IoT enabled Digital Single Market for Europe and Beyond. In 2000 he co-founded a company that was the first Portuguese company with R&D contracts with NC3A – NATO Consultation Command and Control Agency and later with NCIA, developing software that was deployed in Kosovo and Afghanistan (2004-2014). He was in the research teams of the Erasmus+ projects “BLA – Be Like an Athlete”, “SportSign – Sign Language Index for Sports and Physical Education”, “EU-SELF – Social and Emotional Skills Development in Early Childhood Education and Care in Europe”, “empoweringEFT@EU – Empowering Emotion-Focused Therapy practice in Europe”, and coordinated “TRUE – Transparency of Learning Outcomes through Blockchain Technology”. He now coordinates the University of Maia participation in the Horizon Europe project Omega-X and the Digital Europe project DC4EU, and coordinates the JIT4NSTEAM project from the Impulse Programme that aims to bring more students to the STEAM areas. He also coordinates the team of University of Maia working in smart cities and digital transformation projects at Maia city council.
